Information for research participants

We would like to ask if you are interested in participating in a research study. In this document, you will receive information about the project and what it means to take part.

What is this project and why do you want me to participate?

The project aims to increase knowledge about how healthcare, education, and research can meet the needs of people who have been forced to migrate another country and sought protection in Sweden as LGBTQ+. In this project, we define LGBTQ+ as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and people with other queer expressions or identities. The "+" indicates that we also include people with other sexual orientations, gender expressions, and gender identities, who do not solely identify as heterosexual and cisgender. The purpose of the study is to explore how healthcare and future research should be designed to meet the needs of these individuals. We are reaching out to you because you have personal experience of being forced to migrate to Sweden as an LGBTQ+ person. To participate in the study, you need to be 18 years or older.

The entity responsible for the research is the Swedish Red Cross university. The entity responsible for the research means the organization that is responsible for the project. The application is approved by the Swedish Suthical Review Authority (approval number 2022-01483-01).

Question and answers about the research project

How will the project be done?

If you choose to participate in the study, you will first be interviewed individually by someone working on the research project. The interview is expected to last approximately 30 minutes and will take place at a place that we choose together or via computer/phone. After the interview, you will be asked to complete about three questionnaires, which are expected to take around 10 minutes each to answer. The questionnaires will be sent to you at roughly one-month intervals. During the interview and in the questionnaires, we will ask you what is important in the healthcare of forced migrants who identify as LGBTQ+, and what future research should focus on. At the beginning of the interview, you will also answer a few voluntary questions about your background (age, gender identity, level of education, country of birth, how long you have lived in Sweden, and how you identify as LGBTQ+).

Possible consequences or risks with participating in the project

If you carry traumatic experiences, the interview may trigger memories. If you feel the need for support after the interview, we will assist in connecting you with healthcare services.

What happens with my information?

No names or directly identifiable personal information will be requested during the interview or in the questionnaires. A code list with names corresponding to the interview and questionnaire numbers will be stored in a fireproof locked cabinet, accessible only to the principal investigator. The interview will be recorded as an audio file and transcribed verbatim. The questionnaires will be answered online. Your responses will be analyzed at a group level, and the results will be presented as articles in scientific journals. No individual will be identifiable in our reports. Data will be stored in password-protected files for 10 years in locked, fireproof cabinets at the Department of Health Sciences, the Swedish Red Cross University, and in encrypted digital storage. The collected material will be handled confidentially, and your responses will be treated in a way that ensures no unauthorized persons can access them.

The Swedish Red Cross University is responsible for your personal data. Under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access the information about you that is processed in the project, free of charge, and to have any errors corrected if necessary. You can also request that your information be deleted and that the processing of your personal data be restricted. However, the right to deletion and restriction of data processing does not apply when the data is necessary for the ongoing research. If you wish to access your information, please contact Tommy Carlsson (email: tommy.carlsson@rkh.se, phone: +46 8 587 516 21). The Data Protection Officer can be reached at dataskydd@rkh.se. If you are dissatisfied with how your personal data is being handled, you have the right to file a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, which is the supervisory authority.

How do I receive information about the results of the project?

The results will be presented as articles in scientific journals. If you wish to access your individual data or the study's results, you can contact Tommy Carlsson. In the case of unforeseen findings, these may be reported in separate scientific articles.

Insurance and compensation

Participation involves shorter interviews and questionnaires, so no insurance is applicable. Once you have participated in all parts of the study (both the interview and follow-up questionnaires), you will receive a giftcard at GoGift worth 500 SEK. There is no requirement to pay taxes for the compensation. Compensation for lost income will not be provided.

Participation is voluntary

Your participation is voluntary, and you can choose to withdraw from the study at any time. If you decide not to participate or wish to withdraw your participation, you do not need to provide a reason. If you wish to withdraw, you should contact the person responsible for the project (Tommy Carlsson).
